Oh what do I say. It’s been sometime since I watched a webseries so gripping, so engaging.
Based on the brutal murder of Geeta and Sanjay Chopra, the infamous Billa Ranga case,
Raakh sends chills down your spine. So hard hitting, it holds you from episode 1, till the end.
Here, 16 year old Suman Arora and her brother Sahil set out for a radio programme on a rainy evening but never return home. What follows is an 8 episode intense crime investigation, with every second precious. The offenders keep disappearing into the dark, but how does the police nab them, with no mobiles or location data, is what forms the crux of the story. I honestly would not divulge any more.
What works, is the brilliant and effective narration. The series does not rush, instead it explores the emotional aspect of every human involved. Be it the parents, teachers, the police, journalists, even the criminals. The switching between past and present is done at the right places, to create more impact. The back stories provide a better understanding to the pattern and mindset behind the crimes.
The crime itself has been captured so well in the last episode, I somehow didn’t feel I was watching something on tv, I felt I was right there. Have to admit, I had tears and I am still shuddering.
Of the cast, Ali Fazal is very good as the investigating officer, very believable.
Amir Basheer and Sonali Bendre have lesser screentime, but you actually see in their eyes and faces, that agony of two people who lost their children, for no fault of theirs.
But it’s the villain, Akash Makhija, all the way. Raw, real, he looks crazy and acts so well, you would end up hating him. His blazing eyes and that face, they stay with you somehow. Raakh belongs to him. Kudos.
Raakh in my opinion is a Must Watch. For the siblings who fought till the end, for the parents who demanded justice, for a nation that stood with them, for the brave officers who got the offenders behind bars, for the court that handed capital punishment for one of the most heinous crimes of our country’s history.
Bravo.
