Kalakaval – Malayalam – Sony LIV.
A raw and dark thriller, a slow burning chase drama, worth every penny and your time.
The story is similar (not ditto) to Dahaad, adapted from the true life episode of Cyanide Mohan. The treatment is entirely different though. As I have read about the actual incident and watched Dahaad, Kalamkaval offers some unexplored territories and unexpected twists.
What works is the intensity. The sharp and taut narration. The movie moves swiftly, leaving no loose ends. There’s no needless romance or track diversion, Kalamkaval remains focussed and chilling.
Vinayakan is brilliant and very realistic as the investigating officer. But Mammootty Sir as the menacing villain, uff. Is there anything he can’t do? It’s so refreshing to see a 70+ actor experimenting and excelling at every role he dons. Take a Bow Sir.
A gripping tale, you should definitely go for it even if you have perhaps watched Dahaad.
For the sheer Gravity, for the Police Force, for Vinayakan and of course, for Mammukka.
