Mandala Murders- Hindi – Netflix-8 episodes.
Binged this one overnight and honestly, I have mixed feelings. It isn’t bad, but is it worth all the hype?
Vaani Kapoor plays Rhea Thomas, an officer investigating a series of strange and eerie murders. The crimes are heinous, like the floating body in the first episode, severed limbs, thumbs and headless bodies. Then there’s this shrewd politician played by Surveen Chawla who too is a target of the Mandala. So Mandala is a cult with weird rituals, practices and sacrifices for their own God, Yast. The investigation culminating in the revelation of the reasons for the many killings, forms the story.
Ashwin Sanghi fans might appreciate the series a lot, very similar to his kind of work. A sci-fi thriller, Mandala Murders is indeed different. I guess that’s the reason I couldn’t leave it mid way, and have to say, each episode edges you on to the other, raising your curiousity.
But it’s not all that kosher, the pace slackens after a while, there’s plenty of melodrama, not to mention, the gore. Oh the brutality, certain scenes are indeed sickening. The flash back, the oversized machine and the particle physicist angle seemed too far fetched.
Vaani Kapoor has the maximum screen time and does justice to her role. Vaibhav Raj Gupta as the male lead is okay too. But Surveen Chawla delivers a great performance, she is a treat to watch.
If you ask me, Mandala Murders is an edge of the seat cliffhanger, a tad bit slow though.
But it might not be everyone’s cup of tea, marred with flaws, especially the last episode.
All said and done, you could definitely go for it once. I found it okay, Can be a one-time watch.
