Aap Jaisa Koi – Hindi – Netflix
Yet another messy second half, yet another missed opportunity. A movie about finding love late, opposites attraction, age gap and loneliness, Suddenly turns into a predictable sermon about Patriarchy and Feminism.
Madhavan plays Shrinenu, a 42 year old unmarried Sanskrit Professor, forever rejected for his simplicity. He then meets Madhu Bose, a 32 year old French teacher, and cupid strikes.
All’s hunky dory until Shrinenu finds out about Madhu’s alternate identity. The movie spirals down from that point. And how.
I won’t say this is a bad movie. And absolutely Nothing Wrong to Discuss Patriarchy. But with a subject like this, there was so much more to explore about Love and Relationships.
But Aap Jaisa Koi sticks to the age old tropes. The very rigid Tripathis and of course the tyrannical eldest brother. He controls his wife and daughter, every dialogue he spits reeks of mysogyny. ‘Ab Dange Honge!!’, he screams, like a War Cry when the engagement goes awry.
Gender Equality should be talked about, but here, it all sounds very formulaic and nothing that you haven’t heard before. There are many angles to equality too, this one goes for the usual, borrowing heavily from English Vinglish, Great Indian Kitchen and the OGs.
Then there are the Bengalis, forward woke and intellectual, so the cultures are at loggerheads. But wait…
Isn’t this Rocky Aur Rani Kii…. By Dharma, served in a slightly different flavour ??? Sigh…
The performances are all okay, nothing much to write home about.
The ending is terribly hurried and in a blink of an eye, Shrinenu is all changed. Good riddance but, the movie thankfully ends then.
Aap Jaisa Koi could be a one-time watch for Madhavan fans, and for those who prefer simple movies with zero violence and gore.
I like them too but with a pinch of spice,
NOT SO BLAND.
