Title- Dadi, Dantkatha and The Djinns.
Genre: Kashmiri Folktales for Children.
Author : Avanti Sopory
When I was a kid, Folktales were mainly Amar Chitra Katha , Chandamama and Russian books. It’s been ages since I have read folklore, and never from Kashmir.
Avanti’s book is like a breath of fresh air, with the scent of the Valley in every story.
Simple tales with a huge variety of wise characters and good morals.
I have been to Kashmir once, and the book transports you to the lakes, the gurgling rivers, pine trees and the snow capped mountains. The nicknames, the mention of the cuisine and some Kasmiri words, indeed weave magic.
The language is sweet and simple. Once you begin with the first story, you wouldn’t wish to keep it down. As you have kings, Pandits, Pathans, animals, fairies and Djinns….The book feels like a warm Kangri in the cold nights.
I really appreciate the author’s effort to present the rare and mystical culture of Kasmir. The book is a Must Read for children and parents.
For it’s wit, it’s variety and the touching life lessons.
