Disclaimer: Strictly Not Talking about the Politics, Facts, or Lies. This is solely my opinion about the movie, acting, and other technicalities.
For starters, Emergency is Not a Bad Movie.
Unlike some recent politically inclined films, Emergency has sensible and neutral conversations. Yes, There is Class. I didn’t find it a One Sided narrative. Except for Sanjay Gandhi and Vijaylakshmi Pandit’s characters, nobody has been portrayed in poor light.
But my concern is, the Emergency part of Emergency exists for very less screen time.
This is actually a biopic, of one of the most powerful PMs India has ever seen, Smt. Indira Gandhi.
The formation of Bangladesh, and her contribution during Indo-China war have been portrayed very convincingly. But some events like the Operation Blue Star seemed to be wrapped up in a hurry. There are 3-4 needless songs as well, except only for Sinhasan Chodo which was to the point.
And Kangana Ranaut does full justice to playing her. The resemblance, mannerisms, voice, all perfect. She’s a treat to watch. Others are good too, but Vishak Nair as Sanjay Gandhi steals the show.
A lot of emphasis has been placed to dabble with the emotional side of Smt. Indira Gandhi, more than the general impression she holds, of a very strict and no nonsense person. I liked that somehow.
The movie should have been titled Indira and covered more aspects of her reign and decisions, but again, This is Strictly My Opinion.
Emergency thankfully, does not malign Smt. Indira Gandhi, there’s a certain maturity with which it has been handled. I, on the contrary was expecting it would be the other way, but No. And I am glad.
Definitely A One Time Watch, for Kangana Ranaut, her directorial debut and her effort.
