My Name is Cinnamon- by Author Vikas Prakash Joshi
When you have sensitive issues like adoption, teenage, and Usher Syndrome to talk about, and you wrap them all deftly into the exciting tale of a teenager, you create an entertaining and engaging story. And the title of that beautiful story is, ‘My Name is Cinnamon’.
Cinnamon, aka Roshan Rishikesh Paranjpe, is a smart and happy teenager, who hates Maths but loves History. The regular incidents in his life, which more or less happen with all of us, like football matches, academics, teachers, girls, friendly banters, examinations, etc have been chronicled in the form of fun-filled incidents. But then one day, his life changes. His exploration and his quest to find himself, form the gist of the story.
With a generous sprinkling of humor, the author, Vikas Prakash Joshi makes every page interesting. As a reader, you wouldn’t keep the book down, because you’re ever tempted to know what happens next.
I particularly liked the sweet Marathi nicknames that Cinnamon has for his friends and teachers. Also, with his vivid style of description, the author cuts a very clear and realistic picture of cities like Pune, Kolkata, and Nandurbar, cuisines like Puneri, Khandeshi, and Bengali, and the picturesque journeys along the countryside. There are so many aspects of life, that Vikas touches upon.
Cinnamon’s story is adventurous, but serious issues, like the stigma around adoption, genetic disorders, loss of hope, and finding one’s roots, are also brought forth in the subtlest of ways. The other characters are sketched in an endearing manner, so the story fills the reader’s heart with kindness and positivity.
The language is simple and refined. The book is suitable for both adults and children, full of illustrations. It’s been long since I read a book with pictures, so this one gave a cute, innocent, return to childhood kind of feel.
‘My Name is Cinnamon’ not only got me smiling often, but also made me emotional at times. The book is all about love, honesty, hope, and life. It’s must-read.
